Gallery #18

A Colonial style home, built in 1926, the kitchen
featured typical stock cabinetry with a green tile
backsplash, beige laminate counter tops, beige
ceramic tile floor, and mismatched appliances. A
contemporary artist, the homeowner’s goals for her
renovation were to create a serene oasis,
incorporate natural elements such as stone and tile,
and update the look and feel of the space, but still
maintain the integrity of the rest of the home.
To meet these goals, KBDC worked together with the
artist to choose a palette of warm taupe and browns.
The refrigerator was relocated. The painted Maple
cabinets were kept to a simple door style; the
granite features swirls of black, taupe, cream and
burgundy, and a 2 x 4 glass tile backsplash adds
sparkle. 12 x 12 ceramic tile was installed on the
floor in keeping with the overall light feeling of
the space.
Stainless steel appliances along with satin nickel
knobs and pulls on the cabinetry complete the
updated feel, while wide crown molding and special
detailing on the light valance and base cabinet of
the main sink keep the traditional feel of the
kitchen. As with many older homes, there were
structural challenges that had to be addressed such
as a steel beam and column that had to be
incorporated into the overall design.
In addition, two windows were added to the dining
area of the room, which enhances the sense of
spaciousness and additional natural light.
